For the majority of couples, their honeymoon is the most important holiday they will ever take together. In fact, the average couple spends 3x as much on their honeymoon as a typical adult spends on a normal holiday. Apart from big-city destinations such as Paris and Rome, many honeymooners continue to seek out beach-side locations.
While islands such as Bali, Bora Bora, and Zanzibar are wonderful honeymoon destinations, there are countless couples who would prefer to spend their honeymoon in a more understated location. Here are some less obvious island destinations that are perfect for a romantic honeymoon.
Medjumbe Island Sports an Undiscovered Spirit
If you want to spend your honeymoon on a remote island surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Medjumbe Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique should definitely be on your list of destinations to consider. The private island with the naturally-romantic ambiance is home to the Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort, one of the country’s most idyllic wedding and honeymoon venues.
Although remote, the resort sports 12 luxurious villas, each with its own splash pool and gorgeous views of the ocean. Add multiple dining options, a beach-side spa, and a variety of leisure activities to engage in and Medjumbe Island can proudly compete with any of the world’s more commercial honeymoon locations.
Hainan Island is a Tropical Dream
Although China may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning an island honeymoon, it is definitely worth your consideration. In fact, China’s second-largest island, Hainan, is nothing short of a tropical paradise. Often referred to as the ‘Hawaii of the Orient’, Hainan Island is known for its sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and lush green rainforests. The island also sports a rich and vibrant culture with plenty of attractions that can be enjoyed by a newly-wed couple. Some of the activities to include on your itinerary are a visit to Nanshan Temple, relaxing on Dadonghai beach, and sailing across the waters in a luxury yacht.
Azores Boasts Breath-taking Views
Portugal has become increasingly popular as a honeymoon destination in recent years with both Lisbon and Porto being considered among the best city destinations in the world. If you want to spend your honeymoon somewhere that sports unmatched natural beauty, the nine islands that make up the Azores archipelago should definitely be on your shortlist.
The islands with their beautiful beaches and exquisite views are actually the tips of some of the highest underwater mountains in the world. Here, honeymooners can enjoy sunbathing on pristine beaches, relaxing in the natural hot springs at Ponta da Ferraria, or whale and dolphin watching in São Miguel. Outdoorsy couples can also explore the region on foot, hiking along any of the trails that snake across the islands.
Reunion Island is a World-Class Destination
If you want to frolic in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and bask in the best of Mother Nature’s beauty, a honeymoon on Reunion Island may be perfect for you. The French Island, which lies approximately 340 miles east of Madagascar, has all the makings of a top-notch honeymoon destination.
Apart from beautiful beaches, mountains, forests, and waterfalls, Reunion also sports a colorful culture, a multitude of budget-friendly and luxury accommodation options, and plenty of fun and relaxing activities to partake in. Some activities worth including on your itinerary include going on a wildlife tour, parasailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. Depending on how adventurous you are as a couple, you can also visit one of the world’s largest active volcanoes that are situated on the island.
Curacao is a Water Sport Haven
Newlyweds who enjoy water sports and other outdoor activities can’t go wrong with honeymooning on the beautiful Caribbean island of Curacao. You will be spoiled for choice when searching for accommodation as there are many resorts and hotels along the island’s pristine shoreline. There are 35 beaches to choose from and nearly 70 dive spots that are suitable for beginners and experts alike.
Although the island can get busy during peak season, it is extremely quiet out of season and perfectly suited to couples who enjoy their solitude. Don’t forget to head to the Punda and Otrobanda districts to pick up some local art and clothing. Curacao is also known for its scrumptious local cuisine, making it an absolute must to ‘eat like a local’ while on honeymoon.
Witness the Sea of Stars at Vaadhoo Island
It is no secret that the Maldives is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world. While the islands of Male and Veligandu are among the most popular choices, there is another, more understated island that will also make for an unforgettable honeymoon.
Vaadhoo Island has all the makings of a world-class destination including crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches, and spectacular sunsets. What sets Vaadhoo Island apart from the other islands, is its glowing blue waves that are known as the ‘Sea of Stars’. The phenomenon, which occurs during late summer, is caused by bioluminescent phytoplankton that makes the sea look like it is full of glittering stars. If a rare and beautiful natural occurrence is not enough reason to draw you to the island, then all the amenities at the Vaadhoo Island Resort most definitely will.
Mykonos Offers Relaxation and Exhilaration
The island of Mykonos is situated in the southern part of the Aegean Sea and forms part of the Cyclades Complex. A popular party destination, the Greek island is also a great choice for honeymooners with its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and to-die-for food and drinks. Make sure you visit at least a handful of romantic beaches on the island including Super Paradise, Panormos, and Agia Anna.
